Our Aim

We believe that the means are the end and so, by putting into practice how we think a saner, more just, more fulfilling way of living could look like, we hope to inspire and encourage individuals, families and communities to live a lifestyle with a minimal ecological footprint through simple living and harmony with the natural world.

Metrically, our 2 acres of land in Gombak may seem small for a farm, what more for a kampung. But even within small spaces we believe we can make choices that add up to a lot and we see Kampung Cottage as a practical and brave attempt in (re)creating new, necessary ways of doing things that we can integrate into our daily lives.

A major goal for us is to work towards self-sufficiency and we are finding immense joy in this journey. We are growing our own vegetables and are building natural homes (mud huts) that minimize the use of resources and energy. We are also experimenting in rain water harvesting, animal nurturing, generating our own energy from biogas and natural-cycle waste management. We hope that you don’t take our word for it, but come and see with your own eyes!

Our understanding of self-sufficiency also includes economic sustainability. To help us reach this, we have set-up Kampung Harvest to market our farm produce. That said, Kampung Cottage and Kampung Harvest are non-commercial, home-based ventures. Profit is not our purpose for setting up these initiatives though we acknowledge that funds are required to keep them going, in addition to the willing service and kindness of our supporters and community members.

And since we been yet been able to find a suitable farm category (i.e. organic, natural, biodynamic, urban etc) for ourselves, we’ve decided to call ourselves ‘experimental’.

Together, let’s grow a truly better world from the ground-up!
