Values We Believe In
To all folk of Kampung Cottage, we hereby decree:
- that generosity and the spirit of service shall nourish, energize and build up this farm
- each and every resident, guest, visitor and passer-through shall be greeted with hospitality, respect and friendship already given and that these be gifted without condition or expectation (an added bonus: tail wags and kisses from diamond)
- all work shall be fun, meaningful and dignified; any work that deviates must be stopped at once and new ways found to meet this criteria
- we shall act to affirm coexistence and interdependency with nature rather than domination; in doing so, we shall respect nature as a teacher and care-giver and that her laws are a mystery which we only know the tip of the iceberg that are to be treated with awe and humility
- we shall revel in our place amongst the worms, beetles, bacteria and the myriad of creatures that work together to create a ecology for farming as we see self-sufficiency as necessarily involving community and cooperation
- that our experiments in sustainable living be conducted with adventurousness and a love of learning, accompanied by a sense of comradeship in developing practices, innovations and technologies that are appropriate, accessible and replicable
- that we find the greatest satisfaction in non-monetary rewards
- that the farm roots itself in natural diversity, local knowledge, culture and history as a way of looking forward
- that these decrees be taken with light-heartedness and will always be subject to constant change as reflection of our growth
